How to choose the right dance school
If you love dancing and have made the decision to learn, the next step is to choose the right dance school. As this is a big decision, there are several questions you should ask before you choose. You must ensure you pick the one that will be the most suitable for you / your child, as this will make a huge difference in the quality of the tuition you receive and the enjoyment in participating in an activity.
You might think that all dance schools are the same. They all teach dancing, don’t they? Does it really matter which one I choose? The following are things you should consider before making your decision about which dance school to attend.
Why do I want to learn to dance?
Do you want to learn professional dancing in preparation for a potential career path? Or do you only want to dance for enjoyment and leisure? If you want to go down the professional path, make sure the school you select has a teacher with a high level of qualifications and dancing expertise. If you are only interested in dancing to lose weight, get exercise, have fun and make new friends, the teacher’s qualifications won’t be as important.
Do the dance instructors have qualifications and experience?
In Australia, dance teachers should have at least a minimum of Certificate 3 in Assistant Dance Teaching which is the entry-level qualification. A Certificate 4 in Dance Teaching and Management enables a teacher to teach unsupervised and to supervise assistant teachers. Even if the teachers have the necessary qualifications, check their personal dancing experience as well.
Which school specialises in the type of dancing I want to learn?
Some schools specialise in classical dance such as ballet, while others might concentrate on contemporary, jazz, tap or hip-hop. Ideally, a dance school that offers several types of classes would be the best. This is because you might change your mind and want to try another style of dance. In this case, you won’t trouble yourself by having to find another school.
Can I visit the school before booking classes?
A no obligation visit to check out the vibe of a particular school will be extremely beneficial in ensuring you choose the right one for you. While you are there, you should ask yourself various questions. Do I feel comfortable in this studio? Are the teachers friendly? Do the students look happy? Do I feel relaxed and “at home”, here? Answering these questions should help you to decide if this could be the school for you.
What is the dance floor made of?
At first, this might seem to be an irrelevant question, but it is important that you know that the dance floor is made of a material that won’t cause injuries. The worst material a dance floor could be made of is concrete. Dancing on concrete could potentially cause serious injury to your legs and feet, and ultimately to your whole body. Dance floors should be sprung-floors or cushioned floors which have been designed especially for dancing. Look out for a dance school that has floors made with some “give” for safe dancing. Always ask questions about a dance school’s flooring before enrolling with them.
What are the tuition fees?
This could be the most important question of all. You will need to enrol at a school that has a fee schedule you can afford. So, ask about the class fees, and what is included for the quoted price.
Don’t just choose the first dance school you find based on the availability of class times or the one that’s located the closest to you. Think about what you want so you can choose the right dance school. You should first ask these important questions to help you find the most suitable one.
