IS THE COURSE VALUE FOR MONEY AND WHAT EXPERIENCES ARE GAINED?
All students who graduate with their Certificate IV in Dance will have gained ‘real’ work experience in the entertainment industry during their training with us. Ikin Dance are event specialists and the Full-Time students are booked through our in-house agency Chase Creations and the Ikin Dance Events team to perform at various corporate events, film clips, charity events and festivals all over Australia. Some of the very lucky ones may even be chosen for International events.
Throughout the year students are put through exclusive auditions by local and international booking agencies. These companies come to the studio and host auditions, scouting for dancers that they can book for upcoming events and overseas contracts. We are very humbled and honoured to have these experiences available to our students and support them in their pursuit of their dreams.
WHAT ARE THE PHYSICAL DEMANDS ON THE BODY?
Doing any kind of physical activity comes with a risk of injury. Therefore, whilst in the Full-Time Dance Course and training 5 days a week, your health and well-being needs to be of paramount importance. Getting a good night’s sleep does wonders for your health and you will definitely feel the difference if you are not getting enough rest. Healthy eating, being mindful of your training and rest regime will be of invaluable benefit to you throughout the year. Always make time to allow your body to recover from each day of training. Injuries may happen throughout your training, therefore whilst you are healing you need to be in active-recovery and finding out exercises from a health professional to assist you with a speedy recovery to have you back at peak performance asap.

ARE WE REQUIRED FOR ASSISTANT TEACHING?
Students are required to be assistant teachers for the Ikin Dance after school programs. Some of these hours are on Saturdays. Full-Time students will be required to take warm ups and cool downs, play music and help with the general behaviour of the class. At times, you may be asked to supervise the younger students as they walk across the car park to the bathrooms. These classes that you are assisting go towards the 30 hours required to pass the dance teaching section of the Certificate IV in Dance.
We also run dance WORKSHOPS over the school holidays and these are a requirement for all full timers to attend at least 1 of the workshops throughout the year. The workshops are on each Wednesday of the school holidays.
CAN WE BECOME A HOG’S BREATH CAFE SIREN DURING FULL-TIME?
There may also be the opportunity to become part of the HOG’S BREATH SIRENS RESERVES Cheerleading team who support and perform at the Gold Coast Titans home games. This requires added training hours to that of Full-Time and also some weekends when you are required to perform on the field for home games. This is just an option for students, it is by no means compulsory.
WHAT IS LOCK DOWN?
“Lock Down” is the 2 weeks leading up to the Graduation performance (GRAD) where all students are required to attend and give 110% to making the routines look amazing. This time of the year is exhausting and exhilarating all at once. Students are put through their paces and their stamina is challenged, preparing the dancers for contracts where the rehearsal period can be quite a gruelling yet satisfying experience.
The goal of LOCK DOWN is to have all the dancers focused, sharing the same vision and then working with the same passion to have their GRAD look incredible. Our goal is always to give the audience an amazing night of entertainment and to showcase the hard work of each individual, coming together as a group, ready to conquer the world!
WHAT ARE SOME WORK SUGGESTIONS FOR US DURING FULL-TIME?
As the hours for the course make working a bit difficult we suggest you look into weekend work or teaching if possible that is after (or before) your training hours. Retail, hospitality, places that have hours of operation outside your training are your best options as missing training for regular work is not ideal. There are events that come up from time to time that will need rehearsals outside of your training hours…. Although these events are not compulsory, they are amazing experiences and wonderful to add to your resume/CV. We understand that asking for time off from your work is sometimes not so easy, so we endeavour to give you as much notice as we can. However, this is not always possible, given that within the entertainment industry there are a lot of last minute bookings.
IS THERE CENTRELINK ASSISTANCE?
Our Certificate IV in Dance is a Centrelink approved course through NHFA (RTO 31894). Once accepted we can provide you with a letter of acceptance to take in to Centrelink to see if you are eligible for any assistance.
CAN YOU RECOMMEND SOME ACCOMMODATION / SHARED ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS?
If you are moving to the Gold Coast for your training at Ikin Dance make sure you inform Anthony and the team at Ikin, so we can connect you with other students who may be moving here also. There are also websites that connect students who are looking for share accommodation.
There is also an app “This is Queensland” which has lots of tourism and entertainment ideas.
